Essential Summer Footwear
Innovative features protect your feet so effectively, you'll be tempted to wear these summertime shoes till first snow.

Doing anything active in a pair of sandals -- going on a hike, for instance -- was once a feat in and of itself. Head off-road and you'd stub a toe; step into a river and you'd slip on a rock. But spurred by new brands, sandals are now footwear's hottest category, thanks to innovative features such as toe guards and 360-degree lacing systems. While wear-testing 20 types in Florida on Miami Beach's sand and Key Biscayne's trails, we found that our favorites rival, and sometimes outperform, traditional shoes during outdoor activities. --Geoff van Dyke

AMPHIBIOUS | Tread in and out of the water with these go-anywhere sandals.

MION Current
Mion's antimicrobial, "ergomorphic" footbed molds to your foot after 12 hours of wear -- which is why the name is pronounced "my own." It's an added bonus in a sandal that already has a supremely secure fit, owing to a sculpted "rib" structure, nitrogen-blasted foam, and the climbing-grade cord in the 360-degree lacing system.
