One of the most hyped pieces of men's outerwear of the decade has been Flint and Tinder's Waxed Trucker Jacket. This rugged waxed jacket developed a cult-like fanbase immediately following its initial release at Huckberry in 2017 but has recently found itself in the cinematic spotlight as the jacket worn by Pedro Pascal in HBO's The Last of Us.

Wildly functional, dripping with style, and with a proven track record of warding off Cordyceps fungal infections (until proven otherwise), it's the type of versatile layer I'd dreamed of owning. After wearing it for over a year, this is everything you need to know about it.

The Basics

Like James Dean's Harrington jacket from Rebel Without a Cause or Brando's black leather motorcycle jacket in The Wild One, Flint and Tinder's Flannel-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket in Field Tan will forever be known as Joel's iconic jacket from The Last of Us. This jacket isn't just some costume, though—it's a fully equipped piece of workwear that's able to keep up with the rough-and-tumble lifestyles of farmers, hunters, and even New York City subway commuters long before Pascal wore it on the show.

"It was a modern take on a classic trucker design that felt nostalgic yet modern," Ben O'Meara, Huckberry's chief brand officer, said. "The waxed fabric is incredibly hardwearing and ages beautifully. On top of that, it is made right here in the USA, which our customers find a lot of value in.”

Flint and Tinder uses rugged 7-ounce Martexin sailcloth, which is a canvas material made in a nearly 100-year-old fabric mill in New Jersey that O'Meara said is synonymous with "quality" and "longevity." The canvas is then coated in a thin layer of wax for durability and weather-resistance, and this contributes to the beautiful patina that develops as you crease, bend, stretch, and live in the jacket. Inside is a cozy striped flannel lining made from what I consider to be soft but durable, life-proof polyester. Together, the shell and inner lining create a garment ready to take blow after blow without wavering.

The design and construction process also play a role in this jacket's excellence. Comparatively, the sleeves and hemline are cut just a little longer than your average trucker jacket. This alteration offers more protection than normal, a useful feature for colder weather. It's also made in Los Angeles and has come out of the same factory since its inception, which bolsters quality control.

A little over a year ago, I got this jacket in the Havana colorway, which is comparable to a mocha brown. I've put it through its paces in every season, from the temperate spring of Los Angeles to the frigid winter of Boston. I've worn it to do laborious yard work, to keep up appearances while interviewing today's most stylish NFL players, and just to look effortlessly put-together at dinner with friends. If there's one word I'd use to describe it at this point, it'd be "workhorse." If you'd give me four more, they'd be "everybody should own this."

Pros and Cons

I've been able to gauge subtle nuances from wearing this jacket for so long and in so many settings—how it breaks in, its seams and threading, its durability, and more. No garment is truly perfect, not even this jacket, but there's an exponentially higher amount of meritable factors than downfalls here.

Pros

  • It's the epitome of rugged, refined style. Wear it to clean up the yard or navigate the woods. Wear it with your favorite suede Chelsea boots on date night. Its strengths are hardiness and style, proving that you can have both.
  • There are four excellent pockets. I use the chest pocket mainly for sunglasses and the inner media pocket for my phone. The two hand pockets are also lined with the blanket material, so it's soft to the touch.
  • The canvas shell is very durable. I've scuffed and scraped this jacket on corners, cement, doorways, and tree bark. It's been through seven airports and lives in a jam-packed closet. Each ding only adds to its character, and that's rad.
  • It combats light rain, snow, and wind. If you get stuck in snotty weather in the middle of April or October, this should do the trick. The wax coating is weather-resistant and has helped slick light rain and flurries, and has even killed wind chill in the middle of winter. After most of the wax has worn off, it can be re-waxed, and it's not that hard to do.
  • It's comfortable and cozy and doesn't hinder mobility. This is partly due to buying the right size, partly because of the soft blanket lining, and somewhat because of how it broke in. The design also has a lot to do with it.
  • Huckberry offers it in a ton of sizes, including tall. There's a fit for everybody here. Flint and Tinder's Waxed Trucker Jacket comes in sizes XS to 3XL, with tall sizes also available for the vertically gifted.

Cons

  • The longer sleeves aren't optimal for guys with shorter arms. I'm one of them, and I tend to cuff my sleeves because of it. While this method looks great with a T-shirt, it doesn't work quite as well with long sleeves.
  • It feels wet and sticky when you take it out of the package. Texturally, I hated that, but there's not much you can do about this—it's the wax doing its job. This does fade after the first 10 wears or so.
  • It's not the warmest jacket. I wouldn't recommend using this as a winter jacket, even when layering. It's far better used for temperatures from 30 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit with various layers underneath. The good news is that Flint and Tinder also makes the Wool-Lined Waxed Trucker Jacket, which is warmer and better-suited for winter weather, but not sub-zero temperatures.

How to Pick the Right Size

Choosing the right size in Flint and Tinder's Waxed Trucker Jacket is paramount, but what I've learned is that the right answer depends on how, and with what, you intend to wear the jacket.

I'm 5-foot-11 and about 190 pounds with a self-described "athletic dad bod." I normally wear a large top and a 42R jacket, albeit with some alterations to the sleeves.

I decided to go with a large (my normal size) because the layers I intended on wearing under it were mostly thin, and I found that this size could accommodate those types of layers without feeling bulky. I also found that the shoulders were generously cut, with ample room for movement, but the torso and waist were just slightly tailored, giving it a more shapely silhouette with a drape about an inch below the belt. Most importantly, it buttons nicely without looking bulbous.

The sleeves are about an inch too long for my arms, but they look great cuffed. I've long considered the possibility of having it altered, but Stevon Duey, Huckberry's director of customer experience, said it might be harder than you'd think. "You'd be hard-pressed to find someone with the necessary skill and equipment to work on finished waxed canvas."

There's also a world in which somebody would choose to order a size up. Doing this would accommodate larger layers underneath and allow the jacket to sit seamlessly on top.

Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket Alternatives

The beauty of the Flint and Tinder brand is that there's a deep arsenal of waxed jackets to shop if the Waxed Trucker Jacket isn't the right one for you. But in my mind, there's really only one other waxed canvas jacket that rivals this one, and it's Filson's Tin Cloth Short Lined Cruiser Jacket.

This Filson jacket shares many similarities with Flint and Tinder's. They're both made with canvas from heritage factories. They're both lined and treated with weather-resistant finishes and can be re-waxed to bolster longevity. They're both equipped with useful pockets, metal buttons, and adjustable hems. They're both even seen on TV—Filson's Tin Cloth Cruiser Jacket is often worn by Cole Hauser's "Rip Wheeler" on Yellowstone.

Filson's take has been around for much longer, but I think the main difference comes down to price—it's about $50 more.

As for more affordable alternatives to the Flint and Tinder Waxed Canvas Jacket, there aren't many. If anything, prices just go up. But Thursday Boot Company makes a version for about $20 less. Bespoke Post's house brand, Line of Trade, makes a waxed ranch jacket for $158, but it's a little different. If anything, I'd recommend opting for another Flint and Tinder jacket, Bighorn Waxed Shirt Jacket, which is like a watered-down version at a more-than-worth-it price point of $198.

How Do You Clean It?

The care instructions note that it's a spot-clean-only garment. Because it's waxed, you can't wash it, and Huckberry adamantly states not to dry clean it. But cleaning it is fairly simple. For things like food stains, road salt, dirt, and even makeup, I was able to clean mine up using warm water and Dawn dish soap with some light toothbrush scrubbing and intermittent wiping.

Freshening up the inside is what I found to be difficult. There's no way to spot-clean a smell, but what worked well was spot-treating the collar, turning the jacket inside out, letting it air out for a few hours, and sticking it in the freezer overnight with a dryer sheet in each armpit. Don't ask me how or why, but it worked.

Does It Ever Go on Sale?

As the undisputed No. 1 bestselling product on the Huckberry website, where shoppers gladly pay full price, there's no need for Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket to ever go on sale. But we've seen it happen before.

In 2023 and 2024, we found that the retailer held very limited-time sales for only 72 hours—during which the jacket was on sale for up to 15% off. It's not much, but it's the most you'll ever see.
